Workers prepares to drill into the permafrost at a well in Novy Urengoi, Siberia, Russia. The drill bit, embedded with diamond discs along the cutter, costs around 50,000 euros each. It is pushed down by a 10-ton load and turns at up to 200 revs per minute. Achimgaz is a joint-venture between German company Wintershall, a subsidiary of BASF, and Russian gas giant, Gazprom. Russia has some of the world's largest natural gas deposits.
