"THE TUAREG - FADING KINGS OF THE SAHARA"
An impoverished Tuareg man leads one of the last salt camel caravans down from the saltmines of Taoudenni in the north of Mali. He and his partner walk 21 days to Timbuktu twice a year to earn a profit for their familes. The Tuareg used to do this all year round, controlling the salt trade across the Sahara with their superior knowledge of the desert. The salt trade is now owned by the Arabs and their trucks, the days of camel caravans are over and with them that aspect of traditional Tuareg life. These two Tuareg men say that they are the last in their families who will do this job. |
