"The Swedish 'Aunts'"
In Sweden, they sometimes pass under the name “tanter” [‘aunts’ or ‘ladies’] – those elderly women with coiffures made from rollers placed by hairdressers, that treasure their hats but would never put on a pair of jeans, and that you might spot enjoying a piece of pastry at the local patisserie. However, behind the superficial attributes, a piece of Swedish cultural history resides. These are women born into the peasant society, young mothers and wives of the Swedish welfare state, now growing old in today’s globalized and high-technological society. They represent a generation on the verge of disappearance, lives and stories about to be irretrievably lost. Meet the Swedish “aunts”. *** Nancy Friberg, 89.
