Lorene Moore, relaxes with a cigarette while filleting salmon caught by her husband on the Yukon River. A disease, known as "ich" by locals, manifests itself in the heart, liver, spleen and flesh and makes the meat undesirable to eat. Fish caught with "ich" are usually made into a gruel and fed to sled dogs or just thrown back into the river. Some scientists attribute the rise in its presence, sometimes as high as 30% of a day's catch, to global warming. |
