The Young Women of the Polygamist F.L.D.S.: After years in seclusion, the young women of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints found themselves at the center of the often-bilious battle between the state of Texas and their church when authorities raided the Yearning for Zion ranch after receiving a call from a woman claiming to be an abused 16-year-old young bride in resident there. More than 440 children were subsequently removed from the ranch, which they said had been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. What's interesting is that in a case that is, at heart, about doctrinaire male authority, and supposed abuse committed by men, it's the women of the F.L.D.S. who largely had to assume a public mantle, making court appearances, trying to defend both their faith and their lifestyle in the face of deep skepticism. This is a rare and intimate look into their lives.
