Ti Haiti remains an impoverished, neglected
neighborhood in Cite Soleil; an exception to the dramatic revival
occurring elsewhere in one of Haiti's roughest slums after an aggressive
crackdown on gangs by UN peacekeeping troops in January 2007. Haiti has the
worst record in the Americas for infant and maternal mortality, AIDS and
malnutrition, while the majority of Haitians have no access to medicine and
only half of children are vaccinated. Other problems include the
controversial repatriation by U.S. authorities of over 2,000 criminals of
Haitian descent, who confront hardship and discrimination upon their return. A mural of former president Jean-Bertrand Aristide,
who was ousted twice by military coups in 1991 and 2004, remains on a
building in Cite Soleil in Port au Prince, Haiti, May 1, 2007. In January
2007, UN peacekeeping troops launched an aggressive operation to wrest
control of Cite Soleil, the country's roughest slam, from powerful political
gangs.
