When Dr. William Johnson arrived at Fenger Academy
three years ago, he was shocked at what he witnessed--fights in the hallways,
fire alarms being pulled and chaos in the classrooms. This Chicago public
high school, situated at the crossroads of three South Side gang territories,
needed a leader and Johnson stepped forward to assume that role. It hasn't
been easy and it hasn't been quick, but the changes that Johnson has made
have had a huge impact on Fenger and its 3000 students. Fenger Academy freshman Makesha Robinson is
restrained by teachers Gladys Hampton and Sarah Brown in the hallway between
periods in Chicago. Robinson was going after a student who accused her of
stealing money from his wallet.
