Burnt Brazilian nut trees (Castanheiras) stand
following a fire in the Alta Floresta region of Para State, Brazil on Aug.
25, 2007. In 2006, 13,100 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest was
destroyed, according to the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research
(INPE). Tropical deforestation is contributing to climate change and a
massive loss of biodiversity.
