Inmates are made to work in the fields to guarantee the food production for
all the prisons of the region. The wealth of the capital and its surroundings
is in contrast with the extreme poverty of the rural regions of the centre
and of the northern parts of the country. According to the UN publication
"Africa Recovery", the rural population of Mozambique, on the
average, has to walk 46 Km to reach a doctor and 66 Km to reach a school.
