Police officers take cover behind a building after an anti-Aristide protest came under fire while parading through the streets on Port-au-Prince. The protestors came under fire at least four times during the march.

The seeds of discontent are everywhere in Haiti: a lack of jobs, a dwindling supply of food and natural resources, and the highest poverty level in the Western Hemisphere. Haitians, who had entrusted their leadership to former priest and supposed friend to the poor, Jean Bertrand Aristide, became frustrated with the country's lack of progress. He was driven into exile by a popular uprising, with vocal university students at the forefront, despite futile police attempts to maintain their government's stability.
