"Sterilization
camp"
Dr. Harishchandra Reddy performs a double puncture
laporoscopic tubectomy on one woman as two others are prepped for surgery at
Shatnagar Hospital where the government holds a one-day sterilization camp
for poor village women. The actual procedure takes from 30 seconds to one
minute for Dr. Reddy. Three women are prepped constantly so the doctor can
move quickly from patient to patient, performing as many as 50 surgeries per
hour. The government sponsored camps are held all across the state in tiny villages.
The camp travels from town to town but there are as many as four per month
in one location, serving from 50 to 350 women per day.
