The Brooks Range is reflected in a small body of
water adjacent to the Jago River on the coastal plain of the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge along the northern slope of Alaska. This coastal plain-the "1002" area-is where the Bush administration hopes to eventually drill for
oil. Interior Secretary Gale Norton referred to the coastal plain as
"flat, white nothingness..."
