"Scorched Earth"
A third of Angola's population has been displaced by the war. The government's scorched earth strategy during the final offensive forcibly displaced tens of thousands of civilians and destroyed their villages in order to starve out UNITA rebels who relied on the population for food, supplies and recruits. As a result, thousands in remote villages like this one have nothing to eat and survive on what they can forage in the bush.
