Although Hazel Begay wanted to take all her children to Tucson to live with her, Mattea insisted she stay in New Mexico with her father, Halbert agreed. Currently Mattea holds the title of Little Miss Navajo Appreciation Day 2001 which requires her to attend public events and pow wows in her traditional attire.
