Workers stoke the pyre to finish off a weekÕs worth of elk carcasses hauled to a site northwest of Fort Collins. The elk came from 18 ranches in northeast ColoradoÕs ÔÔendemic area,ÕÕ where fears of CWD exposure made the animals difficult to sell. In a deal with the federal government, ranchers accepted one-time buyouts and agreed to get out of the business in exchange for killing their herds.
