Partially treated sewage flows into the
ocean off the coast of Hollywood, Florida. The effluent meets government
standards but is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and other nutrients
that fuel the growth of algae and bacteria. The outfall pipe, which
has pumped millions of gallons of sewage into the sea since the 1950's
is thought to be impacting coral reefs in the area and the fish that
congregate around them. |
