"Campaigning on TV"
Kinky Friedman on the monitor debates the other
candidates at the 2006 Texas gubernatorial debate in Dallas, Texas, on
Friday, Oct. 6, 2006. Friedman, often thought of as a Texas Legend and the
most colorful of the candidates running for Texas governor in 2006, finished
the race at 12% running as an independent.
In the fall of 2006 singer/song writer, comedian,
activist, humanist, and Texas legend, Kinky Friedman, decided to run for
governor of the state of Texas. Running as an Independent, his appeal was to
the "common folk", campaigning in such settings as pool halls and high school
gyms. As the most colorful of the Texas candidates, he attracted monumental
amounts of publicity and press, carrying clout and intrigue at every stop on
the campaign trail. However, Kinky's bigger than life personality was not enough
to win over the hearts of the Texas majority, as he finished the race with
12% of the votes coming in the last of four candidates. Despite his loss,
Kinky Friedman remains a long-standing figure in the limelight with a giant
fan base all over Texas.
