Tamil civilians take military training in
Kilinochchi, a stronghold of the rebels. Sticks and branches are used instead
of guns, however rebels have distributed firearms to the civilian population.
For the long-suffering citizens of Sri Lanka, the
23-year civil war between the government and LTTE, or Tamil Tiger rebels, is
a nightmare from which they cannot wake. Despite the 2002 ceasefire
agreement, the fighting has flared across the country. Since the beginning of
2006, more than 3,500 people have allegedly died in renewed fighting.
