In July 2006, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF)
launched attacks into southern Lebanon after Hezbollah militants crossed into
Israel, killing three Israeli soldiers and kidnapping two. The summer
conflict killed close to 1,500 people , most of whom were Lebanese civilians,
and displaced nearly a million Lebanese and 300,000 Israelis.
