Lucy Ajam (left), 51, holds her ARVS and discusses
her treatment with her traditonal healer Anthony Okello. As a teenager
Anthony Okello, falling ill and near death, Okelleo was read his last rites
and rushed to a traditional African healer. Where modern medicine failed,
charms and herbs prevailed, and Okello apprenticed himself to the wandering
witchdoctor, learning to mix medicines and summon spirits. But when patient
Lucy Ajam complained of rashes and diarrhea, he recognized the first signs of
AIDS and sent her to the nearest hospital.
