There are those who never knew life in New Orleans'
'Ninth Ward,' home of Desire Street and Fats Domino and the Mardi Gras
Indians, the storied epicenter of violence in a violent city, the dilapidated
and vibrant stomping grounds of the city's chefs and jazz musicians and
artists. When the waters of Hurricane Katrina overtook the Industrial Street
Canal levee that had kept its mostly impoverished black residents dry for
half a century, it was as if an angry giant had set his wet, toxic boot down
in the middle of an entire culture and smashed it flat. The water came
pouring into the Ninth Ward on Aug. 30, covering the brightly colored
rooftops. The entire nation sank into anguish and despair as rescuers watched
life after precious life literally slip from their hands into roiling
blackness, while others were plucked at the last minute from their deaths and
set down into a fate as uncertain as the future of the Ninth Ward.
