Shkoder. Grim's brother killed 3 people in 2001 over
a petty dispute about the use of water in their village, in the region of
Dukagjin. Since then he has been forced to abandon his house and village. He
has not been out of his home in 3 years. His three sons do not attend school.
He has 3 brothers with families who live in terror of being killed. Once a
wealthy family, now they have nothing left and no possibility of work.
Unofficial estimates talk of 22.000 families implicated in blood feuds and
more than a thousand children prevented from attending school and taking
their normal place in society. In truth, the phenomena is, without doubt far
more widespread and difficult to quantify since a threat against a family can
extend even to distant relatives with a potentially even greater impact given
the high percentage of families with multiple children. In adition, these
families are today distributed over the entire Albanian national territory as
a result of the large migrations of people from the north into the large
urban centers.
