6 days after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the gulf
coast states, with New Orleans, Louisiana taking the brunt of the killer
storm. l to r- Maggie McEleney, John Lee, Janet Clouden, Kema Smith and
Patrick McCarthy, join in prayer for their neighbor and friend, Vera Smith,
they just buried on a street corner near their homes. Their friend had been
killed by a hit and run driver last Tuesday and left at the corner of Jackson
and Magazine Sts. in the Lower Garden District, north of downtown New
Orleans. After friends and neighbors alerted police and other officials
passing by the scene, their request to remove the body was never answered.
This morning the group took the matter into their own hands and buried their
friend themselves.
