Thousands of Palestinians said goodbye to their
first and only leader. Arafat fought his whole
life for a free Palestine and in 1994 he received the Nobel Peace Prize
together Yitzhak Rabin og Shimon Peres for their combined efforts toward
peace in the Middle East. Arafat spendt his last years under house arrest in
his headquarters in Ramallah, after Sharon came to power when the peace
process was destroyed by militants and extremists on both sides of the
conflict. Thousands of grieving Palestinians gathered for the funeral of
Yassir Arafat at his headquarters in the westbank town of Ramallah. After an
unidentified illness, Arafat was given permission to travel to Paris for
medical treatment. He had previously been under houses arrest since the start
of the recent Intifada. When his body finally arrived home for his funeral,
tens of thousands gathered around the Mukata - Arafat's and the Palestinian
Authority's headquarters.
