A wall of fire from the Grand Prix fire approaches a
church in Lytle Creek California. Firefighters stopped the flames from
burning the church.
Arsonists started several fires in Southern
California in late October. Three of them in San Bernardino County merged
into a raging inferno. The 50-mile wall of flames destroyed more than 1,000
homes and triggered the evacuation of more than 40,000 people. Ash and smoke
blanked the region for miles, making it appear to be nightfall at noontime on
the worst days.
