Uday's palace has become a base for the 1st Armored
Division of the U.S. Army. Parts of the palace were destroyed by U.S.
bombing during the initial phase of the war. Iraqi laborers, hired by the
army to work on the base, paused to look at the palace and cast their shadows
into the now-empty swimming pool.
