A Lendu soldier, some of whom are
responsible for cannibalism, lies in a makeshift hospital in Bambou. Captured
and beaten by the local population, he now waits in his room for news of his
future. Death is almost certain.
The Conflict in the Ituri province of Congo flared
this year in Bunia. After peacekeepers moved in rebel groups observed the
ceasefire in the centre of town. But outside the UN mandate were the outlying
towns where battles between Lendu and Hema tribes were going on unabated,
even though UN peacekeepers were just a matter of miles away, their plight
was ignored. Hema and Lendu tribes were fighting over land and access to
mineral wealth, the UN recently outlined that Uganda and Rwanda even though
they have pulled out of the country are still financing different tribal
groups for their own financial gain.
