Tahiti/French Polynesia November 2003. The Polynesian
people live life in a symbiotic relationship with the surrounding ocean. It
provides them with everything they need to survive year-round. The sea
provides fish and eco-tourists. But the brilliant blue water is much more
than a source of food and economic income. The temperature never drops below
24 degrees and gives the locals a venue for sport and a lifelong playground.
There are few beaches on Tahiti that offer the chance to surf close to shore
because much of the island is surrounded by coral reefs that act as a
wavebreaker.
