There are no band geeks at Hines Junior High School
in Washington, DC. Decked out in white gloves, sporting plumes, and flashing
their gleaming instruments, the Marching Band Panthers win respect with their
performances The showmanship involved requires physical strength, long hours
of practice and pure dedication. Band director Eddie Anderson started the
band at the school, and he demands that his players maintain a 2.0 or better
GPA. He hopes their being a part of the band will teach them a little bit
about how to put on a show and a lot about pride. Here Band Director Eddie
Anderson leads students on his trumpet during band try outs. In the front row
first timer Nathaniel Rapsberry, 13, plays along on his sax.
