"Midnight Fire Watch
Firefighters keep an eye on the flames licking Highway 18 just past midnight
on Oct. 29, 2003. By morning, the wildfire had jumped Highway 18 east of
Skyforest in the San Bernardino National Forest. About 50,000 mountain
residents were evacuated.
