A young jockey named Mohamad Salem sits on the floor
of an examination room at Fatwaniya Hospital after falling from his camel
during the third day of racing at the 3rd annual Kuwait Championship at the
Kuwait Camel Racing Club. He only suffered from superficial injuries,
according to the emergency room doctor who treated him.
But camel
jockeys often suffer from lifelong impotence, and face serious injury and
death when their camels fall, said Ansar Burney, a lawyer and human rights
activist in Karachi, Pakistan.
