Judy Walgren, freelance photographer. Walgren recently left the Dallas Morning News to pursue a freelance photography career. Her photographs have been published in the New York Times, People and Texas Monthly, among others. While at the Dallas Morning News, Walgren was part of a team that won the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for their series on violent human rights abuses against women around the world. As part of this project, Walgren photographed women living in Islamic countries and was the first person to photograph a femal genital mutilation ceremony in Somolia. In addition, she has covered wars and famines in the Horn of Africa. Walgren has published a book about children and war in Southern Sudan, and she is developing a book on African elders with Italian writer Francesca Marciano. Among her other achievements are an Award of Excellence from the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation, The World Hunger Award, The Barbara Jordan Award for reporting on people with disabilitie and several Dallas Press Club awards.
